There is a push to pass new legislation to make a fatal sucker-punch punishable for up to 20 years in prison.

Northland National MP Matt King has had his Member's Bill drawn to create a new offence of Assault Causing Death, for cases of a coward punch or king hit that kills the victim.

Matt King told Larry Williams he believes the alternative charge would make it easier to convict and sentence people.

"The jury's are reluctant to convict people for manslaughter with a life sentence, and I think we should provide an alternative charge."
