A Māori leader says the Crown needs to wake up to a Waitangi Tribunal report calling for a radical overhaul of water management.
The report says there should be a national co-governance body between the Crown and Maori to allocate water.
Mataatua District Maori Council chairman Maanu Paul told Mike Hosking the Crown needs to recognise its responsibilities under the Treaty.
He says under the Treaty, Maori have control and management over their assets, which includes water.
“The Crown needs to recognise its responsibilities under the Treaty. Maori have total control and management over their assets, and one of those assets is water.”
