One person's trash is another person's treasure.

A recent TradeMe report has found, on average, every New Zealander has 18 unwanted items, which could sell for anywhere up to $1500.

It's also found 73 percent of us have bought something secondhand in the last month.

TradeMe head of marketplace Lisa Stewart told Mike Hosking many people are reluctant to sell their old junk because they don't feel it's worth anything.

"Some of those items going dusty in cupboards and garages could be worth a lot more than people expect."

Stewart says if you've got a bunch of old stuff lying around it's definitely worth it.

"It's easy to sell, and not many people would turn their nose up at $1500 dollars."
