Forest and Bird says 1080 opponents who claim to be eco-warriors are anything but.

DOC has spent $10.7 million more on security after workers were targeted with abuse, including having personal details and pictures shared online.

There have been 54 threats and 96 cases of abuse and harassment against staff this year.

Forest and Bird chief executive Kevin Hague told Mike Yardley 1080 groups aren't conservationists.

"They are not the kind of people that we work with in the environment at all. They are basically people with a sole obsession about 1080."

He says 1080 opponents are particularly intense and he doesn't know how they can be stopped.

"This is not a group you can have a rational discussion with. The science is very clear about 1080."
