Otago University researches believe a study on the impact of fish oil impacts for professional rugby players could also ring true for the everyday public.

Researchers have used Chiefs rugby players as guinea pigs to find the benefits of taking high levels of fish oil.

The world first research found fish oil, taken in a protein shake, reduced lower body muscle soreness and fatigue.

Lead author Dr. Katherine Black says while this particular research was rugby specific, omega three can have an impact on everyone.

"If you are starting a new training program then you may see some beneficial effects. Protein we know post-exercise is important. Whether you can get it from a food source as well it's probably going to be of great benefit to anyone who is starting to exercise."

Black told Mike Hosking they were quite open-minded whether they would see any beneficial effects.

"Especially in rugby players where muscle damage is quite high and they've got high body mass, so we were actually quite surprised that we could see such beneficial effects over the period of five weeks."
