Local Gisborne cop Josh Calles has been on the beat for six years, when he's not helping run his family's fish and chip shop.

But he's just had a big break of a different kind, starring in the movie Broken which is about to open in 50 cinemas nationwide.

It's inspired by a true New Zealand story, and is a modern version of Joy Cowley's Tarore and Her Book.

Calles told Mike Hosking that making the movie was a blast. 

It was his first time acting, and he hopes that he did a good job. 

"Part of my motive was to let the marketplace make that judgement call."
