The founder of New Zealand's first online high school says selecting school times will always be a fine balancing act.

New South Wales is trialling staggered start and finish times in primary schools, to create more flexibility for families and reduce school rush hour traffic.

The government is being urged to consider a similar trial in New Zealand.

But Crimson Education co-founder Jamie Beaton says told Mike Hosking several factors have to be considered, before school hours are changed.

"The more flexibility introduced into the schooling model, the more challenging it is for the staff to manage. And the other thing to think about is some students just do need a consistent structure in their week."
