A blockade of lorries and a human chain of demonstrators around France's Calais port has caused chaos on the roads.
Protestors are calling on the French government to close the refugee camp known as 'the Jungle'.
Deputy Chief Executive of the UK's Freight Transport Association James Hookham said the camp is a humanitarian disaster, and the French government hasn't been processing asylum-seekers in accordance with EU rules.
He told Mike Hosking migrants and people-smugglers are getting increasingly violent in their attempts to cross the border into the UK.
"I heard a story this morning of even a car being dumped in front of a truck to bring it to a stop so that migrants could attempt to get into the back. I've heard stories of drivers talking about machetes, sticks and stones being thrown at the truck."
Hookham said they want the French government to uphold Europe's rules and process asylum-seekers in the proper way.
He said drivers are too often set upon by people-smugglers and migrants carrying weapons - sometimes as serious as firearms and machetes.
"What we as the Freight Transport Association feel is unacceptable is that truck drivers, and indeed tourists, going about their everyday journeys should be exposed to this kind of threat and intimidation and attack. That's just not on. That's not something we can live with."
