Jacinda Ardern says work is being done to see if proposed Firearm Prohibition Orders are worth the hassle.
The proposed Orders would ban certain criminals from being anywhere near firearms, and give police greater powers to investigate those people.
Ardern says they are designed to target those who've already proven they shouldn't have access to guns.
She told Mike Hosking the limits of the Orders need to be established to see how many people would be impacted.
"In order of this to apply to someone, they need to have multiple offences.
"Or you might say, they don't need that many but they might have breached a protection order."
