Lisa Carrington has become New Zealand's joint most successful Olympian.

An hour after retaining her K1 200 title, the 32-year-old won gold in the K2 500 final with Caitlin Regal in Tokyo.

She joins fellow kayaker Ian Ferguson as the only New Zealanders to win four golds.

Carrington now has five Olympic medals - four gold and a bronze.

The mantle could be about to pass from Ferguson to Carrington with the chance for two more medals at these Games.

How does Ferguson think Carrington has done it?

“Hard work, nothing’s God-given. You get a little bit of talent given to you at the start, but everything’s what you work for and she’s worked hard at it.”
