The president of the Federation of Islamic Associations New Zealand said meeting Prince William was a huge honour.

The Duke of Cambridge is in Christchurch today meeting victims of the March 15 mosque terror attacks.

Doctor Mustafa Farouk told Tim Dower the visit means a lot to the Muslim community in Christchurch.

"It's very nice of the Prince to visit, it shows how compassionate he is and people are very excited that he is around."

He said his meeting with the Duke focused on how the community was healing following the attacks.

"He was very concerned about how the families are doing...so that was basically what we discussed. That was what he was interested in knowing and he also personally extended his own condolences regarding what happened."

Farouk said Prince William was very genuine and caring and was clearly very concerned.

"It was really good that we were able to have this meeting with him because we could see that he was very concerned and really genuine in how he expressed it. He was very easy to talk to...he would make a very good king in the future."

He said the Duke said the way New Zealanders came together was a great model.

Yesterday, Prince William made also made a surprise visit to the 5-year-old girl who was shot in the Al Noor Mosque shooting last month.

The little girl, Alen Alsati, received critical injuries after she was shot multiple times in the attacks on March 15.

Earlier this month she woke from a coma and was unable to see, speak or eat by herself but in the weeks since has made small steps in recovery.

she was visited by Prince William and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern at Starship Hospital, with Alen quizzing the Prince about his family.

"Do you have a daughter?" she asked in a video released by Kensington Palace.

"Yes I do," said William. "She's called Charlotte - she's about the same age as you."
