More support could be on the way for the tourism regions most affected by the closure of international borders.

New figures show tourism spending in Otago dropped by almost a quarter last year, while many tourism businesses in Fox Glacier are operating at 20 percent normal capacity.

Finance Minister Grant Robertson says the Government is looking at a number of support options.

But he told Mike Hosking any support will need to be targeted to protecting a core, long-term tourism sector, while we wait for a trans-Tasman bubble.

"The Government won't be able to save every business, but it wants there to be a tourism sector ready to go,  when borders eventually reopen."
