There's envy from New Zealand universities as their Australian counterparts are allowed to welcome back students.

Australia's reopening its borders to vaccinated international students, business visa holders and refugees from Wednesday next week.

International tertiary students won't start arriving in this country until March, and only a thousand will be allowed in.

Victoria University Vice Chancellor Grant Guilford told Mike Hosking he's looking across the Tasman with envy.

“It will certainly give the Australian universities a head-start in their recovery.”

He said the university's been thinking about providing MIQ for double-vaccinated students who test negative for Covid-19.
