Building organisations are developing a scheme to prevent companies and contractors offering low ball tenders for construction contracts.

MasterBuilders is working on a voluntary accreditation scheme for commercial builders, which will confirm their capacity to complete a job.

Specialist Trade Contractors president Graeme Burke told Mike Hosking it's to ensure clients have confidence the company can see out the works.

"They basically benchmark them for their commercial viability, their track record, their capacity to complete jobs of certain sizes and complexity."
