Overseas evidence suggests the Green Party's proposed ban on fossil fuels could be a step in the right direction.

The Greens want to bring forward the government's 100 percent renewable energy target by five years and re-instate the ban on building new fossil fuel electricity generation.

Tokoma Park City, just out of Washington DC, has finished phasing out one of its gas stations for an all-electric vehicle charging area.

Sustainability manager Gina Matthias told Mike Yardley she hopes this move will encourage other cities to do the same.

"Some of the policies we're talking about are really common sense.

"So going to renewable energy, those markets are proving that renewable energy can be very competitive."
