The choicest cuts of New Zealand grass-fed wagyu beef is being sold to America's elite for hundreds of dollars a kilogram.

Members of the elite subscription-based Steak Club in the US are ordering top quality steaks through a new app.

It's so popular, there's a waiting list.

First Light Wagyu managing director Gerard Hickey told Mike Yardley people are willing to pay a little more because it's the Rolls Royce of beef.

"The Japanese have spent many generations, many hundred of years, developing this marbled beef. We're able to produce the same quality off of New Zealand grass conditions."

He says they sell a range of their products here too.

"In 150 supermarkets across the country. We've certainly got a range of high quality steaks in those. They're not the very highest marbling like what's going to the steak club, but it's still a very good quality product."
