A proposal to move Queenstown's airport has been fiercely discussed at a "standing room only" community meeting.
Two architects and urban planners want to shift the tarmac away from Frankton and redevelop the area.
Kelvin Peninsula Community Association chairman, David Mayhew, told Mike Hosking several people took issue with the proposal.
"It's very much a starting process. We are very much engaged with the community around some ideas looking at what should happen or could happen...where possibly we redevelop Frankton in a way that is good for the community there, and that might then lead to the decision to relocate the airport."
He said the while the local community is against expanding the current operations at the airport, everything else is up for debate.
"There was a consultation last year and it was overwhelmingly rejected by the community here."
Mayhew said they are still looking at where they would move the airport, but there are multiple locations around the Cromwell to Wanaka area.
However, he said there is criticism about whether that is too far out of the city.
"I enjoy the convenience of the airport but the problem is there are trade-offs in the other values we are trying to maintain. But if you got to any other resort in the world, you don't land in the resort itself, you usually need to travel for one or two hours. What we need is to relocate the airport and then put in a rapid transport system to allow visitors to get to Queenstown or Wanaka or wherever."
Mayhew said the timing of the move hasn't been decided yet because they are still in the discussion phase.
