Dentists are pleased National wants to put an extra $30 million dollars a year into children's oral health,  but say there are gaps when it comes to adults' dental care.

The party would give children a new toothbrush and toothpaste each year,  and would put more money into paediatric and school services.

National is calling the policy MySmile and builds on New Zealand's current policy of free dental care for children under 18 years old.

Dental Health President Dr Katie Ayers told Mike Hosking a number of children are slipping through the cracks so the money will assist with preventive care for them.

"We're desperately seeking funding for low income adults , because depending on where you live in the country, you may or may not have access to help."
