Universities New Zealand is adamant halls of residence accommodation is helping, not hindering students.
Victoria University Students' Association says the rising cost of first year accommodation is making tertiary study unobtainable for some people.
The cost of one Wellington hall has now reached almost $19,000 a year.
But Universities New Zealand executive director Chris Whelan told Mike Hosking they're doing their best to keep costs down.
"Halls are largely provided at cost by the university to ensure students are able to get beds in the current housing market.
"Halls of residence's offer more than just a bed to sleep in. They also provide food and support for the student leaving home, which also comes at a cost."
