Visitor numbers are up, but hotel bookings are down.
Figures from Tourism Industry Aotearoa show occupancy rates are flattening, with bookings for the Auckland region at their lowest in five years.
Chief of Tourism Aotearoa Chris Roberts told Tim Dower it's great news for visitors, not so much for hotel owners.
"Air BnB may have changed consumer behaviour, and three star hotels in particular are seeing the rewards as well."
Major events schedules for 2021 include the America's Cup and the APEC leader's week conference, which is expected to bring 10,000 visitors in November.
