Police checkpoints are going to be in place this Easter to ensure people have legitimate reasons to be on the road.

New Zealand's approaching halfway of the four week lockdown and the government's been clear from the outset, it could be extended.

People are to stay in their bubble.

Police Association president Chris Cahill says there'll be checkpoints on the roads to ensure people have legitimate reasons to travel, otherwise they'll be sent home.

He told Mike Hosking that overall, New Zealanders are abiding by lockdown rules.

Cahill say laws enacted for lockdown mean police can stop cars without a reason.
