Judith Collins' position as National leader is now in doubt, following her sudden demotion of Simon Bridges.
She's demoted the former leader and relieved him of his portfolios, after being made aware of a serious complaint from a female caucus colleague.
Newstalk ZB understands it was made by Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean, and relates to a comment Bridges made in her presence about five years ago that was not directed at her.
Bridges addressed the matter outside Parliament a short time ago.
“What we saw yesterday was truly desperate stuff from Judith Collins. I think it shows she’ll go to any length to hold onto the leadership.”
Newstalk ZB Political Editor Barry Soper says MPs have been called to a caucus meeting at 9am, where they're expected to express their frustrations.
I’ve never seen anything so feral in the National Party. It’s seen as a clear play to move Simon Bridges to one side.”
