There's criticism of research that suggests many midwives aren't keen on vaccination.

A study published today in the New Zealand Medical Journal has found only 65% of midwives have strong confidence in vaccines, despite the fact they're expected to give information about them to new parents.

College of Midwives deputy chief executive, Alison Eddy, says only 43 midwives were surveyed, which is a very small sample.

She doubts it's representative of the more than three thousand midwives in the country.

"The other thing to bear in mind is regardless of someone's personal opinion, they're required as a health professional to provide information to families about immunisation."

Alison Eddy says it seems that's happening because we have a very high uptake of immunisations in New Zealand.
