The officers were at the Police College in Porirua when the Prince of Wales opened it in 1981.
London Liaison Officer Superintendent Barry Taylor received a service award, and told Jack Tame it was incredibly special.
"The general comment from the recipients and family and friends has been what an amazing gentleman he is, and how he personalised it as much as he did," he said.
"I had the opportunity to speak to him on parade in 1981, and he actually made reference to it during the presentation, which was quite a nice personal touch."
