A problem with the gas supply has left dozens of homes ablaze north of Boston after a series of explosions.
An 18-year old has died after a house exploded and a chimney landed on the car he was in.
Gas and power are being shut off to prevent more explosions.
US correspondent Steve Mercyznski told Larry Williams something went wrong with the pressure while the gas system was being upgraded.
"Around 50 homes dealt with explosions and fires at least 10 people hospitalised, one reported killed from what seems to be some kind of issue with the gas company," he said.
"There were so many fires in the area, there were not enough firefighters to deal with it... one person referred to it as Armageddon."
