New Zealand could form part of the new silk road.

The government's signed an agreement with China to co-operate on the Belt and Road project - which aims to build infrastructure better connecting countries to China.

NZ China Council executive director Stephen Jacobi said it's not a free-trade agreement, but it'll allow for easier trade.

He said it'll span from Eurasia, through China, and into the Asia-Pacific.

Jacobi said it's not clear exactly how New Zealand can be a part of the scheme but China's agreed to spend time figuring it out.

"We benefit if we can have goods and services moving more freely along the Belt and Road. China gets to benefit from New Zealand's expertise in this area."
