Hunting and farming of native animals proposed

Instead of a traditional ham, would you consider putting a roast weka on the table for Christmas this year?

There are growing calls from the food industry to allow the hunting, farming and sale of native animals.

South Island farmer Roger Beattie told Larry Williams endangered bird species like weka and kereru should be farmed to preserve them.

"With Kereu, you would probably have a fisheries type regime or a quota management system, but with something like weka, you can fence them in like sheep."
