There's a push from the top to get more women and girls involved in sports.

The Government's announced a $10 million investment towards a strategy that champions equality for kiwi women athletes.

But Women in Sport Aotearoa are calling on the sports sector to up its game when it comes to supporting women and girls to take part.

CEO Rachel Froggatt told Larry Williams that it is a systemic issue from getting women into sports to getting them to maintain a career in sport.

"They do have opportunities, but they don't have equal opportunities to play sport."

She says that many male sports teams are fully funded, whereas female sports teams have to pay their own way.
