There were a few surprises in the gun reform speech delivered by Jacinda Ardern earlier today.

All military style guns and the equipment used to convert other weapons into them have been banned in New Zealand, effective immediately.

Assault rifles and larger magazines are now also outlawed.

Firearm law expert Nicholas Taylor told Larry Williams some things appear to have been left out.

"They can obviously only go so far with regulations, which is what they have done. There will most likely be a select committee and some feedback from interest groups so it can be done properly."

He was surprised to see no huge push or extra money towards the vetting of people getting firearms licences.

Taylor says a gun register has been included but in a roundabout way.

People with banned items can sell them to those with an endorsed licence, which will register each of those guns against the owner's name.
