There are lots of factors to consider if you're thinking about having your own chooks to get around the national egg shortage.
The SPCA says keeping chickens isn't as easy as it seems.
SPCA Chief Executive Gabby Clezy says the birds need a coop with plenty of water, shade from the elements, and they need to lay their eggs in a clean nest.
She says they also need a protected outdoor area to run around.
Clezy says chickens like to scratch, forage, and dust bathe, but any outdoor area needs to have shelter and protection from other animals.
