Heather du Plessis-Allan: National won't commit to latest desperate policy

Somewhere in National’s offices they’ve got a book called ‘desperate election policies’ and that’s where they’ve gone for this latest round of policies.

This is boring, desperate, predictable stuff. Taking the benefit away from parents who don’t vaccinate their kids. Taking the benefit away from gang members who can’t explain how they afforded their flash motorbikes.

I’m sure this will go down well with most hard working voters, because you can’t really argue with the idea behind this stuff. Few of us like how much money the country wastes on the dole.

Of course, all kids who can be vaccinated should be vaccinated, and nobody wants to defend gangs and their law-breaking.

But this policy? Come on, we all know it’s not going to fix these problems. Mainly because we all know National’s not actually going to go through with it.

Anyone who votes for this thinking National will commit to it is a fool. They’ll get way too much heat from the softy softy media and bleeding hearts to do this. Can you imagine a front page of a newspapers with a family starving because they didn’t vaccinate their kid? Can’t you imagine National defending that and saying oh too bad.

They know that’s a risk. They know that would be weeks of bad headline and people saying they’re hard hearted, and they’d have to back down.

National does this every election; beat up on benes, beat up on gangs, beat up on naughty kids. Last election it was boot camps for young offenders. The election before it was Paula Bennett cracking down on benes taking overseas holidays. 2008, it was fining parents for their kids’ truancy.

It rarely happens, and if it does, it doesn’t work. A quarter of a million kids regularly missed school last year, gang membership is going up, and one in 10 of us are on the dole.

So this is really just National wasting everyone’s time quite frankly. I'd rather they just came up with better policies.
