Heather du Plessis-Allan: This is a lockdown, not a holiday

I’m a little worried that some of us have fallen into the trap of thinking we’re about to go on a four week holiday.

Quite a lot of people have gone out and bought surf boards. They’re being advised on Facebook that it’s ok to go out fishing. They’re asking if they can go hunting. Planning long drives out into the country to look at the scenery.

We’re not going to be able to do these things.

I don’t blame you if it looked like it was going to be possible. It’s quite clear the government is working this out as we go, and there’s a bit of contradictory information being here.

For example, a Facebook page has shared advice from TV fishing show host Clarke Gayford telling people on Facebook that it’s ok to go fishing and diving.

But today the coastguard has said don’t do it, don’t go out on the water, if something goes wrong the coast guard themselves are in lockdown.

The point of it is to keep us apart. If everyone’s allowed out for anything, we won’t be apart.

So we’re all supposed to stay at home, and we’re allowed out for two things:

- Fresh air. So out for a walk to get some exercise, for yourself or your dog.

- Essential things, like going to the supermarket, going to the pharmacy, going to work if you’re an essential worker.

Think of it like this if you’re wondering if you’re allowed out to do whatever. If you’re stopped by the police, whether you’re walking or running or driving, will the police accept your reason for being out?

If you don’t think they’ll accept the reason, you’re probably not allowed out for that reason.

Remember: this is a lockdown, not a holiday.
