The First Word: OCR cut, Serco and Goff

OCR

The cut in the interest rate by the Reserve Bank no big surprise. The OCR is now at 3% and looking to go to 2% by years end. This is absolutely fabulous if you are looking for a mortgage. Its disastrous if you have money on deposit. For savers, its a conundrum. Asset prices are overpriced now. There is nowhere to go.

SERCO

The Minister of Corrections has met with Serco today. I think the issues of fight clubs, booze and drugs, and certain inmates more or less running Mt Eden is probably more wide spread. The Minister needs to deal to Serco and then deal to the rest of the prisons. Getting rid of the dodgy screws would be a good start. Labour is trying to make out its only the private prison that's out of control - I doubt it. Its not just Mt Eden that needs fixed, its the entire prison system it seems.

RUGBY TRIPS

The Greens are being killjoys again. They have come out against the Parliamentary rugby teams trip to the UK. The Greens are claiming some sort of conspiracy because the trip is being sponsored in part by corporate's. Its petty.

SKY CITY CONVENTION CENTRE

NZ First tried to scuttle the Sky City convention centre deal last night. They were joined by Labour, and the Green Party. Essentially what they tried tried to do was make the taxpayer fund the $450 million project. Really looking out for you aren't they ?

GOFF

Then we had the likely Auckland mayoral contender Phil Goff's bill to prevent farmers selling their own farms to foreigners. I suppose that means the Chinese ? Goff conveniently overlooked the fact that huge tracts of land was sold to foreigners when he was around in government. Again, the other opposition parties voted to stop farmers from selling their farms to who they like -just like poodles.

COUNCIL ASSET SALES

Auckland Council debating whether or not to sell some of its assets. Like the airport and the port. Len Brown has already made his mind up. He claims he has support against selling assets. Suppose he has. Many think you can just keep borrowing to fund stuff. I don't happen to come from that camp. Cut non-core spending and sell assets for the crucial infrastructure the city needs or bugger off and lets get a council with so me courage and foresight.
