HDPA: Some World Cup rules need changing, but we weren't robbed

We got so close, didn't we? But in the end, the Black Caps were beaten by a technicality eh? By a rule, and who even knew that rule existed before this game?

Look, if you feel robbed I get it, but we weren’t robbed, that was the rule, and the guys knew the rule when they played the super over.

It’s tempting to torment ourselves with what might have happened, but the fact is it's sport. It’s easy to criticise in retrospect the decisions and the rules made on the field, on the day, these guys do the best they can. Every one of them, from the players to the umpires, and we live with their decisions, they are just doing their best.

Having said that, and fully accepting the decision, there is probably a good case for the ICC to reconsider a couple of things,

First of all, that rule about the boundaries. Picking a team based on the number of boundaries scored during that match if there's a draw - that a ridiculous rule.

It's way too arbitrary. You might as well count the number of run-less overs or the number of wides in the 19th over, pick anything, it's about as arbitrary as that.

There are better measures available, like the number of wickets each still has in their hand at the end of the match.

That rule wasn’t there at last Cricket World Cup, and, quite frankly, it should be relegated to the bin.

And the second thing is the super over. That is no way to decide a match, is it?

It’s so unfair. One squad has batsman with their eyes in with their eyes in after 50 overs. The other squad is at a disadvantage because their batsmen have been standing out in the field getting cold and are too far away to get a good look at what the ball’s doing.

But, as debatable as those rules are, when our guys took the field last night, they were the rules, so we can’t say we’ve robbed. We haven’t been. We weren’t clear winners, you could say we drew and, really, we did.

But the English played a great game with lots of heart, good on them, congratulations to them.

And the Black Caps, they did amazingly well, they did us proud. Today, I am proud of them, and I’m sure you are too.
