New Zealand may need to be prepared for a change in format to the regional trade agreement in the Pacific.

Speculation is rife that the deal could make a comeback, as President Elect Joe Biden reversing policy positions set by President Donald Trump.

The president-elect said he was “struck” by how world leaders have repeatedly told him during congratulatory calls that they look forward to the U.S. “reasserting its historic role as a global leader” under his administration.

The controversial TPP was signed in 2016, but Trump pulled out of the deal after taking office in 2017, meaning it never came into force.

The remaining 18 countries then agreed to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, without the US' involvement.

Former New Zealand Ambassador to the US Tim Groser told Heather du Plessis-Allan says Biden will want to repair the TPP, but we'll need to be open to change.

"It will raise some issues for our people and the other countries involved, but we'd have to be enthusiastic about it."

He says that Biden has not yet appointed the US' version of a trade minister, which means any trade changes would be unlikely.
