The subject of compulsory Te Reo lessons are back in the media.
The Maori Development Minister says New Zealanders are ready for compulsory Te Reo in schools - but the education system is lagging behind.
The Greens are pushing for it to be made compulsory, but the Prime Minister has been more reserved, saying universal availability is the first step.
But Nanaia Mahuta says compulsory Te Reo is a matter of when, not if.
"Look at mainstream schools like Kings College, who have already made a commitment from Year 9 to have compulsory Te Reo. That's a signal that New Zealand's ready, it's just that the education system isn't."Â
It is believed that NZ First is against the introduction of a compulsory introduction.Â
On Larry Williams Drive today, Larry rebuked the idea as indoctrination, but Wellington Mornings host Heather du Plessis-Allan gave her support to the idea.
"Why shouldn't we be learning this? It's the language of this nation."Â
Panellist Nick Leggett says that Kiwi kids should learn a second language, but does not think it should be compulsory Te Reo.Â
