One epidemiologist says having no new cases strengthens the argument to be in level two.

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield announced there were no new cases in New Zealand today.

Epidemiologist Dr Simon Thornley told Heather du Plessis-Allan that this raises two questions: How serious is the virus in New Zealand, and do lockdowns work?

"The answer to the latter I think is they don't work and that we need to come out of it as soon as possible."

He says if you compare us to Australia, our levels rose higher than they did in Australia during a more relaxed lockdown.

"If you compare states in the United States, you see that they, with no lockdown, they are doing just as well if not better than states that are locked down."
