There are some concerns it's too risky to let students back into the classroom.

There are 13 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the community today, 12 of which are linked to the Auckland cluster.

However, principals are being given the option of allowing Year 12 and 13 students back to school early during alert level 3.

Professor Shaun Hendy from Te Pūnaha Matatini told Heather du Plessis-Allan he wouldn't have given the green light if it was his decision.

"Physical distancing, use of masks, those are all things I'd recommend if this is going to happen, but I do think it is a kind of risky call."

Secondary Principals Association president Deidre Shea says it will ensure students can achieve at the end of the year.
But she says depending on how long Aucklander's remain in level 3, more measures might need to be put in place.
