Far North iwi have set up checkpoints, believing they can do just as good of a job as Police.

While Police are reiterating there is no legal basis for checkpoints at Alert Level Two, organisers argue they have rights as Treaty partners.

Organiser Reuben Taipari says the community's anxiety level is high.

"And if we are able to do, and are capable of doing it, then I don’t see why we shouldn’t."

Police are continuing to speak with Northland Iwi.
