Should South Auckland be vaccinated first?

Phil Goff is calling for Aucklanders to be vaccinated before the rest of the country in the wake of the latest community cases.

The Auckland mayor says he supports rolling out the vaccine in South Auckland first.

However, he says the rest of the region should then be next in line for the vaccine, before it's rolled out to the rest of the country.

Goff says Auckland's losing about 200 jobs and 30-million-dollars each day it's under lockdown.

He says the vaccine roll-out should be prioritised in Auckland to help avoid future lockdowns, and protect jobs and incomes, for the sake of the national economy.

Vaccinologist Helen Petousis-Harris told Heather du Plessis-Allan that it makes sense to consider prioritising South Auckland given its at the centre of the outbreak.

But, she says that we don't have the vaccinators centred in Auckland to make for a smooth rollout.

"There'd be no sense in having so many vaccines sitting in Auckland and not sending it out to other centres."

She says that we haven't authorised the other vaccines yet, so we don't know how many doses we'll get at one time.
