A mysterious new player may have emerged to challenge our supermarket duopoly.

An organisation called "Northelia Version 1.4" has submitted a proposal to the commerce commission to set up a new, third supermarket chain - but only if the commerce commission passes certain reforms as part of its current study of the sector.

The people behind Northelia have remained anonymous, but they claim to be experienced entrepreneurs, and it's being reported that 2 Degrees founder Tex Edwards is one of them.

Retail consultant Nick Hogendijk says not to forget that New Zealand has done this before.
