Otago residents were surprised yesterday with a musical world exclusivee thanks to Coldplay.

The UK band placed 15 advertisements in the Otago Daily times, each with a lyric from their upcoming album.

Advertising Manager Nic Dahl told Heather Du-Plessis Allan lead singer Chris Martin chose the paper.

"In October, they did classified ads in various papers around the world, and from that I believe they picked the ODT to carry their lyrics, so it's pretty exciting for us."

He says he believes the band picked the paper for its independent voice.

"Being New Zealand's last major independently owned and operated newspapers might have been on of those reasons. Independent of media and having an independent voice in the South Island probably helped."
