An alternative route around the Ashburton Bridge work seems to be edging closer.
The bridge is closed until further notice - with piles likely damaged.
Ashburton mayor Neil Brown told Heather du Plessis-Allan people are working hard to get the alternative route up and running tonight.
He says some sections on the route had washed away.
"They're putting rock and gravel and that sort of thing to build those approaches back up.Â
"There's about four sections of road which they are working on and have been going all day on that."
