There are calls to review part of the electoral law around New Zealanders living overseas.
Currently kiwis who have not returned home for over three years can not vote.
However some feel given the difficulties around travel costs brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, the law needs to be reconsidered.
Human Rights lawyer Michael Bott told Heather du Plessis-Allan he finds the law confusing.
"Some parts of Europe for example, I think Germany's one place, you can be 20 years overseas before you can no longer vote, so the question is why do we have this three year period when you lose the rights to vote? It is somewhat arbitrary."
"The mere fact you're popping overseas and you're on a long-term contract, shouldn't mean you lose the right to vote arguably."
Mr Bott says he would like to see it change, as a lot of people would he expects.
"We're in an economy where people travel for work but they still call New Zealand home and have an interest in it."
Mr Bott adds he does not see a problem with new Zealand adopting a 20-year time-frame, like Germany.
