It's been revealed the decision to ban future offshore oil and gas exploration was not made by cabinet.

The Government has released documents of all correspondence around the announcement, which show it was a political decision the coalition party leaders came to amongst themselves.

Minister of Energy and Resources Megan Woods told Greg Boyed that it was discussed with cabinet through an oral license.

Despite rumblings that the oil industry is considering legal action, Woods says she believes the Government followed the law and did everything right when it came to notifying the industry.
