Purposefully slowing traffic is making it easier for people to get around

Waka Kotahi is purposely slowing traffic.

Chief executive Nicole Rosie told a parliamentary select committee yesterday they're testing slowing traffic through queues instead of traditional measures like speed signs.

It's part of the Innovating Streets programme, and the intention is to expand it around the country.

Greater Auckland director Matt Lowrie says told Heather du Plessis-Allan it's about making it easier for people to get around.

"A lot of international research is showing is that if you make it easier to drive, ultimately more people do that and therefore you get more congestion and more emissions and it makes it harder for people to walk and cycle in their communities."
