National's slamming plans for Covid-19 checkpoints in Northland once Auckland's borders open next week Wednesday.

Two checkpoints will be set up south of Whangarei - one on State Highway 1 at Uretiti and one near Maungaturoto on State Highway 12.

Roughly 300 cops will be rotated over several weeks.

Police Spokesperson Mark Mitchell told Heather du Plessis-Allan it leaves other parts of the country vulnerable.

“It’s a lot of police to be taking from around the country where the communities that they've been taken out of are gonna have a reduction in the services provided to them over the summer period to be put on checkpoints that are going to have no efficacy at all.”
