Scotland is to become the first country in the world to make women's sanitary products free across the board.

Scottish MPs backed the plan overnight, which is expected to cost the equivalent of $50 million New Zealand dollars.

The scheme has been widely praised, and New Zealand wants to follow suit.

Labour MP Louisa Wall told Heather du Plessis-Allan says that the Government has heard that 15 per cent of young women miss one day of school a month due to not having sanitary products.

She says that there are some schemes that allow free products and she wants the Government to do the same, but other steps need to be taken.

"We have to start where Scotland started in 2018. Their initial pledge was to fund sanitary products for students. That's what the petition before the Parliament has asked for."

Wall says that she thinks they are too expensive for some communities.

She says that it has been raised within the Labour caucus that these products should be distributed through schools.
