Rain and hail shows why Christchurch needs a covered stadium

Bad weather over the weekend has renewed calls for a covered stadium in Christchurch.

On Saturday night, hail and torrential rain was an unwelcome addition to the match between the Crusaders and the Sunwolves, and has fuelled the fire burning under many local sports people.

Canterbury Sport CEO Julyan Falloon is leading the charge, and says the Greater Christchurch Regeneration minister Megan Woods promised a decision by the end of this month.

He says the affordability-based decision is between three options - a retractable fully-covered pitch, a fully covered permanent pitch, or a permanent pitch with seating covered only.

Falloon says Saturday night shows why a new stadium is needed.

"The crowd had to run for cover when they were pelted by hail. Our loyal Cantabrians are still loyal, they are hardened supporters, but they have waited long enough."

Falloon says people need enticing out from watching live sport on TV at home.

"If people had heard there'd be a massive hailstorm during the game, they'd think twice about going."
