Calls for national register for building materials

A construction expert is calling for a national register for building materials.

It follows recent worries surrounding the likes of aluminium panels, through to imported weatherboards and even plumbing products.

Now, the Building Industry Federation wants a more robust way to prove a product meets the requirements of the building code.

Chief executive Julien Leys told Heather du Plessis-Allan that New Zealand does appear to be a dumping ground for dodgy products.

"Everyone agrees there is not adequate product data, it's not integrated."

He says that a register would weed out these products, and would require the manufacturer or importer having to warrant that their product meets the code.

If New Zealand does not do this, Leys fears that we will see another leaky building crisis.

"What the register does is ensure that all the information that someone needs to have on hand to ensure it is used in the right way."
